Dental examination FAQ
The treatment starts by anesthetizing the tooth in question. A diamond bur is used to remove the caries from the affected area. After the tooth has been freed from decay, the tooth is reconstructed.
As a rule, the tooth filling takes between 10 and 20 minutes.
The complexity and number of planned fillings is decisive for the costs. There are small and simple fillings (e.g. cervical filling, sealing) up to large and complex fillings (e.g. build-up after root build-up).
Goals of the dental filling
A dental filling is a tooth-preserving therapy that is used in the case of a defect such as caries. We use tooth-colored composite reinforced with ceramic particles.
Preserve teeth
Minimally invasive treatments, such as filling therapies, have an important place in tooth preservation. Increasingly, people have their own teeth until old age. With the gentle and preserving therapy (e.g. laser therapy) you can keep your teeth until old age.
Fillings from dentist
The dentist can treat small and medium damages with soft materials such as cement or plastic. They harden directly in the mouth. The choice of material for the dental filling depends on the individual case. Our dentists in Zug will be happy to advise you in detail. We then make the decision together with the patient.
Composite fillings
The so-called composite filling consists of only 20 percent plastic and 80 percent microscopic glass and ceramic particles. It is tooth-colored and hardly noticeable. The so-called adhesive technique enables direct bonding to the tooth structure in a single step. A special lamp hardens the soft composite with cold light. The bonding technique is gentle on the healthy tooth substance. In the case of medium or larger damage, the dentist applies the composite to the defective tooth layer by layer using an adhesive technique. Its durability has improved significantly in the past. On average, composite dental fillings now last about eight years. For this reason, the dentist uses them for both anterior and posterior teeth.
Temporary fillings: Glass ionomer cement
Glass ionomer cement is used for temporary fillings and for defects in deciduous teeth. When cured, it has a matt white surface and adheres well to the tooth hard tissues dentin and enamel. It also contains fluoride, which it releases slowly. It thus protects the tooth structure from caries. The disadvantage is its short shelf life. The statutory health insurance covers the entire cost of the restoration. If glass ionomer cement is combined with composite, the material is called compomer. The dentist uses this material for defects in milk teeth.
Fillings from the dental technician
For major damage to the molars, the dental technician can make inlay fillings - so-called inlays, onlays or overlays, also called partial crowns - individually in the dental laboratory according to the dentist's specifications. They are usually made of gold or ceramic.
First, the dentist prepares the tooth for the selected restoration and then takes an impression of both jaws. Based on this and other information, the dental technician fabricates the exact inlay filling, usually in detailed manual work. Once the filling has been completed in the dental laboratory, the dentist fits it in the patient's mouth and makes any necessary adjustments. As soon as the patient has a natural mouth feel, the dentist finally inserts the denture.
Ceramic fillings - almost like natural teeth
With specially developed dental ceramics, the dental technician can recreate the tooth almost perfectly. Ceramic inlay fillings or partial crowns are tooth-colored and similarly translucent to natural teeth. Ceramic dentures are very durable and have a long service life of about ten years. In addition, they are well tolerated. They also do not transmit heat and are tasteless. Ceramic inlay fillings are inserted with a special plastic adhesive.
Inlay fillings and partial crowns can be produced by the dentist as well as in the dental laboratory with the computer. The dentist takes a three-dimensional image of the tooth using a special camera. The dental laboratory has modern model scanners at its disposal for digitization. The denture is precisely designed with the computer and then milled from a ceramic block. The dentist can insert the finished construction directly.
Composite dental correction
Instead of veneer treatment, it is also possible to use non-invasive therapies such as tooth correction by means of composite filling(see photo). It meets basic aesthetic requirements without loss of tooth substance, without drilling and without injection.
Since the substance is spared, there is always the possibility of switching to veneers or crowns later.
