Correlation of flavored water and acid-induced loss of tooth structure investigated
Flavored waters are in vogue among consumers and are a good alternative to plain mineral water. Researchers have now investigated the mutual relationship between flavored mineral water and dental erosion in a study presented in the International Journal of Environment and Health.
For their findings, Polish researchers Anna Lewandowska and Marzena Joanna Kuras from the Medical University of Warsaw analyzed water available on the market in terms of pH value, acidity and phosphorus concentration. The researchers critically concluded that both flavored mineral water and water mixed with sugar substitutes (xylitol, erythritol, stevia and glucose-fructose) cause enamel erosion or significantly increase the risk of erosion.
