The cause of inflammation of the nerve in the root canal is usually deep caries. However, bacteria can also enter the inside of the tooth if it has been broken off in an accident. In rare cases, a filling close to the nerve can also cause similar inflammatory reactions of the nerve. If the inflammation remains untreated, the bacteria can spread via the root tip into the surrounding tissue. The classic, painful “fat cheek” with an accumulation of pus can develop as a symptom. In preparation for the treatment, the dentist can place a small elastic cloth around the tooth. This so-called cofferdam keeps the tooth free of saliva and bacteria during the root canal treatment and makes the treatment easier. At the beginning of the treatment, the dentist usually opens the tooth under local anesthesia. He removes the infected tissue with very thin instruments. The dentist also rinses the root canal with an antibacterial solution. At the same time, he checks the success of the treatment using X-ray images. Electronic root canal length measurements are helpful during treatment. Several sessions may be necessary. In the meantime, the dentist treats the tooth with an anti-inflammatory or antibacterial insert and closes the tooth temporarily.
